Biodiesel
In almost every part of the World, the rising prices of petroleum fuel create a big problem to each individual’s pocket. The economic effect is so tremendous that it affects global economy. This led to many people all over the World to search foe an alternative fuel source. Biodiesel came out as one of the favorites to fill up the vehicles fuel. It is about time to find out how to make Biodiesel fuel at home.
Why Biodiesel and what is it made of? In plain language it is a clean burning fuel produced from domestic renewable resources. It can be blended with petroleum diesel at individual’s preferred level which the word Biodiesel is developed. This is used in diesel engines which require little or no modifications. It has no bad odor, simple to use, biodegradable and free from sulfur.
Is it safe to use and did it pass the International health protection standards? The answer is yes. The production process must be regulated and must comply with the industry specifications (ASTM6751). Did it pass the testing requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments for the health effects? The answer is also yes.
So how is Biodiesel being made? The well known production method is called alkyl esters. There are types of alkyl ester production. The most popular is the Base Catalyzed Transesterification of the oil with Alcohol. The second one is the Direct Acid Catalyzed Esterification of the Oil with Methanol and the third is the Conversion of the oil to Fatty acids, and then to Alkyl esters with acid catalysis.
The input chemical composition consist of 12% Alcohol, 1% Catalyst and 87% oil, resulting to output composition of 4% Alcohol, 1% Fertilizers, 9% glycerin, and 86% Methyl Ester. The fat or oil is derived from vegetable oils or animal oils.
Base Catalyzed Reaction is popular because it has a lower processing temperature of 150 degrees Fahrenheit, at a pressure of 20 psi. It has a high conversion rate of 98% with minimal reactions and reaction time. The Methyl Ester conversion is direct, and it is not necessary to use exotic materials of construction.
The process starts with the reaction of fat with an alcohol, like methanol in the presence of a catalyst. This produces glycerin and methyl esters or Biodiesel. The methanol has to be charged in excess to assist in the quick conversion and recovered for reuse. You can use sodium or potassium hydroxide as the catalyst.

Biogas
You probably have heard this before: “Biogas as an alternative vehicle fuel”. I heard about it long before but I did not pay much interest in it. Not until I return to Manila for my annual vacation. You see, I am an overseas Filipino worker based in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. I am really shock when I saw the price tags of petroleum fuel. It has gone up ten times 10 years ago.
The quest for an efficient alternative fuel is still going on however; there are bio fuels that are already available in the market commercially. Biogas fuel is one of them. So what is biogas? It is another form of renewable energy where its energy is extracted from organic waste materials. It is manufactured very much cheaper compared to the petroleum fossil fuels.
How is energy generated? It is a biological reaction caused by bacteria degradation. The organic materials is being attacked by bacteria in the absence of oxygen hence anaerobic digestion occurred and gas in the form of methane and carbon dioxide is produced. The digestion process occur when there is an absence of oxygen. The ideal Environments are marshes, rubbish dumps, septic tanks, and Arctic Tundra. There are improvised methods developed by producing complex machines to have a better result.
Adding water to the organic waste material is the conventional method used and it is also known as the “liquid process”. The process used in “landfill sites are called “solid process”.
So now that we know how the biogas is produced, how do we collect it and consume it as a fuel? Methane gas from experience is very hard to compress. For this reason, the best approach is to use it as stationary fuel. Meaning we do not transport it but use it directly from the site where the gas is produced.
This fuel is best used at home for cooking, heating, light and absorption refrigeration. It can also be used to run pumps that are powered by gas powered engines.
What are its benefits? These are the benefits:

- The sludge produced could be used as a fertilizer.

- It provides additional source of jobs.
In conclusion, Biogas fuel is one of the accepted Alternative Fuel Sources in the world today. With its valuable benefits and advantages over the petroleum fossils we should work together for its improvement. I personally believe that one day; we will live in a much cleaner, safer and healthier world.
